An Outreach Ministry of:

“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”  Proverbs 18:24 (NIV)

In the red light districts of Phnom Penh, men who’ve come from ‘western’ countries wander the streets, frequent bars, and nightclubs. Although many of these men seek companionship with a ‘sex worker’ (female and male adults and sometimes children), some are there just looking for entertainment, eating food and drink in the company other ex-pats or tourists.

GLUE Crew volunteers, during our bi-weekly Friday outreaches to these districts, make no judgments. When we engage in a conversation with a man on the street or in a bar who’s by himself, then we offer unconditional companionship for just a moment, an hour or two, or possibly begin a long term friendship if he so desires.

We do this, because we know by our own experiences, that ‘companionship’ based only on give and take, will eventually leave one’s heart empty after the relationship has run its course, which is, in many cases, after the money has run out. But we have a relationship with the person that Solomon wrote about in Proverbs 18:24. A friend who sticks with us through thick and thin, 24/7, as He promised in His word:  "...Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Heb 13:5 (NIV). It is God through Jesus Christ whose Spirit lives within us, who desires to fill these men’s hearts with His supernatural companionship which never fails, but this can only happen through our willingness to reach out, as many have done for us (sometimes in our darkest hours).

Yes, GLUE refers to us sticking with the men we meet, for a period of time as described above, but it’s also an acronym that stands for ‘Guys Like Us Edification’ Ministries; we realize that although many of these men have been judged as being hopeless; with names such as ‘johns’, ‘sex tourists’, ‘perverts’ and worse, they are no less deserving of God’s love and forgiveness; through Christ’s death on the cross, than we who also sin; yet experience grace that’s available to all. Because we see these men as no different than ourselves, we seek to edify (lift up, enlighten), instead of tearing down or judging; as has been their experience by many in the communities they come from.

Text Box: GLUE Crew volunteers are English speaking Christian men and women, who have other ministries or jobs they do during the rest of their time in Cambodia. Outreach evening teams consist of some who go out to engage men directly, and others who stay at a ‘prayer center’, to pray for the outreach teams and the men they’re engaging.
